At 4:10pm I was still setting up and spraying cover scent around when I noticed shooter8 crossing the meadow N-S at 200+ yards. I got Bryson in position hoping the buck would hit the tree line and ease our way. The buck entered the trees and we never saw him again.
The buck I call shooter8 is a mature buck I have had on camera all fall. I hope one of my boys gets to let the air out of him this season.
Here is a couple pics of him form 2012.
After the excitement of shooter8 passed and the boys went back to being loud rowdy boys, I noticed a buck I had never seen running in the same direction that s8 came from ,but in a hurry. I got glass on him and could tell he was not legal. His horns were tall and narrow. I had a pic of an old deer early this fall, but could not be sure if this was him. This deer was really spooked by something and after thinking about it, I realized he might have been spooked my my truck. He finally made his way to the south tree line and disappeared just as s8 did.
Another 15 minutes passed and we giggled and i explained as much about hunting as possible to the two boys. I explained that when a deer is nervous or scared they sometime blow through the nose. I was trying to get them to realize that all their back and forth SHHHH!! might alert any deer that something is scary around here. I really try to teach them as mush as I can with my limited knowledge. I want them to love the outdoors as much as I do.
While my lesson was falling on deaf ears, I see another BIG bodied deer crossing the meadow N-S(again). Put glass to it and my heart skips. I tell Bryson to get ready. He is ahead of me and has his .223 up and aimed at him. I let out a grunt and the buck stops, but is facing straight away and looking over his back. Bryson says" I'm gonna shoot him right in the butt hole!" I didn't let him, but it was tempting.
The rest of the sit was pretty uneventful, but we got some good hunting time in and got to see some good bucks.
Monday at work I decided I need a decoy....I got one now.
Hope we get a repeat visit on turkey day...We will be in the stand ready with Miss Doe posing in the meadow about 100 yards out.
Until Turkey day...
