First Ever Duck Hunt!
Hunting Season 2013
Lets begin in September with the first hunting season of each year, Dove.
- Dove season opened on Sunday this years so Jeff and Kelli's Annual Skeet shoot was on the day before the opener. We had a good turnout and the boys actually won a little money in the kid shoots. Brock actually put me out in one of the wolf chases. I eliminated Pop in a previous wolf chase so the day was not all bad.
- Opening day we met at Jeff's before daylight and headed over to Josh's blue house to hunt. The day was slow and we ended up in the pasture on the highway by Josh big barn. We killed a few but the fellowship was the best part. Kevin, Bubba, Jeff, Brock, Bryson and myself were involved in the usual Braley Tailgate Dove activities.
- We dove hunted a few more times, but we usually only hunt dove on the opening weekend...not sure why either.

- I did manage to go once and saw deer, but only little buck came with bow range.
Kyle on the ONLY bow hunt of 2013
Best bow setup I have ever had....hunted it ONE time!!!
- Opening day of gun season was spent at deer camp at Jeff's so we didn't hunt. Go Figure!! The boys wanted to stay at camp all weekend and ride 4 wheelers with Dawson... I didn't argue with them. As long as they are having fun...I'm happy.
- Pops took us to his lease between Jacksboro and Graford. I planned on bowhunting, but I quickly realized I don't like bowhunting in a pop up blind. After the first morning set, I decided to set in a blind with the boys.
- Bryson and I sat together first and we saw a few deer, but none offered a shot. Right at dark, two coons come to the feeder so I let Bryson shoot "at" one with his .308. The feeder is about 150 yards away and the coons were half grown. He made a perfect shot and dropped on in its tracks.
Bryson and a Jack County Coon 2013
- Next morning Brock and I go to Danny's blind and we saw lots of deer but again, nothing offered a shot. Bryson was sitting with pop and made a text book shot placement on a great cull spike buck. Shot entered between ribs, took out the heart and exited between ribs. The deer ran about 75 yards and piled up.
Bryson's first buck! - After that weekend, Brock and I have hunted, but Bryson feels he has killed enough deer and elects to sleep in on morning hunts. We have been keeping up with the trail cams and have only got one decent buck on camera so far.
Big Boy 2013
- It is time to harvest doe in Texas....but evidently not in our world. We have seen doe each sit this season I we thought a doe in camp on Thanksgiving would be a slam dunk. My family celebrated Thanksgiving this year at deer camp. I was worried that the mud would hinder it, but the weather was perfect.
Family Thanksgiving 2013 Kevin, Kyle, Jeff
2013 Thanksgiving - Kevin, Jeff, Brock, Bryson, Isaiah, Ashton and Austin stayed at deer camp from Thanksgiving day until Sunday morning. On Friday, while I was at work, they went on a hog hunt with the dogs. Remember it was Jeff and Kevin and 4 kids. needless to say, they caught a BIG sow. Austin, Chazleigh's oldest, has never been hunting or anything like it. He was the one who got to spear the hog. I think it may have made him want to do it again.
- Jeff and Kevin said my boys were VERY good help with everything during that hunt. I guess they have learned from watching us, because we have never tried to teach them. Makes me proud!!

- A few weeks after thanksgiving, I took a day of vacation to tie up some things around the house. I also decided to take Ms. Brylee on her first hunt.
Shoot it daddy!!!!....it was a crow about 1 mile away. |
Looking a 4 point buck as it passed the blind. |
- We sat in Randy's big blind and actually saw lots of deer...Brylee wanted me to shoot every living thing we saw. She was good with he iPod for about 10 minutes, then she began asking 200 questions and wanting to climb out the windows. I wouldn't trade a minute of it of anything in the world!
That pretty much sums up the season so far. Sorry for not keeping this blog updated like in years past with better stories and summaries.
Like I said at the first of this post, Form now on I will be doing things a little different. I get a GoPro camera and I plan on posting videos on here as well as stories.
Until Next Hunt!!!!
Nov 25th 2012 - Fire and Coloring Books
It is a WINDY 55 degrees and blowing form the due south!
Randy and Lynlee are set in at 3:54 and Brock, Bryson and I are set in at 4:03pm.
Before heading out today we were discussing if we had everything. I ask Brock if he had his bullets and he said "I put them in the safe." I told him that they were not there and when we get home he had to find them or suffer the consequences!
About 4:22pm Tall6 steps out of the south tree line and in a flash sprints across the meadow to the tree line between us and Billy Bob's wheat field. When Tall6 reached the tree line he paused for a 10 count and then in a flash was across the plowed ground like a gazelle. I guess this stiff wind has them spooky and leaving no room to be caught in the open.
At 4:43pm Randy text me and asked if I can see the smoke to our south. I could see a slight haze of smoke and hope like he devil it wasn't the meadow on fire. I have never even thought about the meadow burning until this instance. This smoke was all we had to witness for the rest of the hunt...unless you count the doe I spotted slipping up behind my feeder only to slip away just a quickly.
About 5pm Bryson informs me that he needed to #2...BAD. I dug in my pack and all i could offer him was a transformer beanie. Brock was quick to take possession of the beaning that has been in my pack for over a year and nixed the idea of using it to clean up. By now Bryson was desperate and had to hit the woods with his coloring book in hand.
I thought he would get out of sight before getting down and dirty, but he just stepped out of the trail to the blind and dropped um. I told Brock to face away and not make Bryson embarrassed but Bryson was the one hollering at us to "LOOK!" We laughed our heads off for about 10 minutes. Needless to say, our hunt was over, but it is time like this that will be remembered for a lifetime.
I love to laugh with my kids and I have learned that the older they get, the more common the laughter is. I guess raising them right form he start will pay off in the long run....Brylee might be another story...she has me wrapped and I will admit it!!!
Y'all come back now...
SKKKRRRREEEEEECCCCHHHH!!!! I almost forgot something...
When we were walking out after the hunt. What did I happen to stumble upon......a full box of .308 bullets. I called Brock over and showed him and he said..."I thought I put them in the safe!" Thanks to someone somewhere who made me walk that exact pathway and look down at the exact minute to find those bullets in about 200 acre knee high prairie grass meadow.
Nov 24th 2012 - Jake's Redemption
This post is extremely special to a little guy who a few post earlier missed a shot on his first deer.
Jake and Randy get set in about 6:15am and it is the perfect morning.
Clear Skies
40 degrees
Slight Wind
The first action of the morning came about 7:30am when 5 does and a nice 9pt (we have yet to capture on camera) come to have a snack of corn. Randy said he could have dropped the 9 several times, but was determined to get Jake on the trigger. After several attempts, the deer mosey away unknown to the potential 60lb life threat in the little camo blind.
At 8:45am business was picking up once again. One lone doe came back for another mouthful of corn, but Jake was ready...
Jake and his first doe....BIG DOE I might add!!! |
Nov 22nd 2012 - Thanksgiving Evening Hunt
This evening was 60 degrees with a slight wind. Our little blind fits 3 good, but it is perfect for 2 hunters. Bryson made his nest in one corner and I in the other. We arrive about 4:30 and the waiting began. ... ... ... ... and the waiting never stopped!
We were exiting the blind just before complete dark and 7 doe decide to come by. It was too dark to make out the button bucks so I didn't let Bryson bring down the thunder. When these gals finally left the area we climbed down and went to get the SD card form the camera. As I turned to leave the feeder area, I notice a dark figure standing in the meadow about 100 yards away. I put up my binos and it is Tall6 looking at us. I told Bryson to be still and that there was a deer heading toward us. He said "GIVE ME A GUN!!!" I hushed him and told him that was not happening because we cant tell which deer it is exactly. He was not happy about that!
Tall6 walked up to us like a dog would. He caught wind about 30 yards and bolted back into the meadow. We begin walking out and we have that feeling something is watching you. I look over in the meadow and Tall6 is walking with us about 30 yards parallel to us. He continued this for about 300 yards until we turned to the truck.
Maybe he had never seen a human before and was just curious. What ever it was the made him do that, hope he learns to be afraid of humans. He will not survive long enough to become a shooter if he keeps escorting people to their trucks.
We were SKUNKED on Thanksgiving Day, but it all good...
Nov 22nd 2012 - Thankgiving Morning Hunt!
Brock, Bryson and myself are settled in our redneck blind about 6:20am. We were a tad behind Randy and Jake who arrived at about 6:02am.
The weather couldn't be better for sitting in a blind, but it could be better for deer hunting. There is a slight wind and the mercury hovers at about 60 degrees. Like I said, it is very comfortable in the blind, but it needs to be about 25 degrees cooler for perfect deer hunting. There is NO frost and NO dew. Dry is an understatement!
At about 7:10 a lone doe strolled across in front of the B set from the south. She paid us no attention and I thought it was a good sign for deer activity. The Atchley's had only sen Lynlee's crow at 8am and the boys in both sets were getting antsy. My boys are good as long as they are seeing game, when nothing is moving, they are ready to go. I'm sure all boys are the same because Randy said Jake was hounding him to leave as well. I'm sure when we were little we got anxious too.
Randy text me and said he was shooting for a 9am departure...I agreed.
By 8:30 my inner youth came out and I was ready for mom's turkey and dressing. I told randy we were finished with the moring hunt and I would text him when we settle in for our evening hunt.
We climbed out and the boys were headed across the meadow when I spot BigBoy walking the south boundary by the cedar thicket. I whispered as loudly as possible for the boys to "Get over here!!" I got the boys behind the blind, but we were still on the ground. I watched the buck as he eased down the tree line about 200yrd from us. I turned to get Brock's gun loaded but when I looked back the buck had disappeared. I put Brock back in the blind and I attempted to grunt the buck back into view. It is safe to say, no shots were fired! The big bucks don't get big by being seen a lot.
We headed home and then to Mom's house for Thanksgiving dinner! If we can, we will be back this evening...
Nov 21st 2012 - The Day of the Crow
Randy got the itch today and gathered Lynlee and the gear and got a head start on the holiday hunting. I was at work when he text me to tell me they were in the blind. Boy was I jealous. Nightfall got to them before any deer had time to. The only thing they seen was a wiley ole crow.
You can killem if you dont log some blind time though.
We will both be back in the morning for the Thanksgiving hunt 2012.
C-Ya Tommorow!
November 18th - Bucks were moving!
At 4:10pm I was still setting up and spraying cover scent around when I noticed shooter8 crossing the meadow N-S at 200+ yards. I got Bryson in position hoping the buck would hit the tree line and ease our way. The buck entered the trees and we never saw him again.
Shooter8 |
Shooter8 |
The buck I call shooter8 is a mature buck I have had on camera all fall. I hope one of my boys gets to let the air out of him this season.
Here is a couple pics of him form 2012.
After the excitement of shooter8 passed and the boys went back to being loud rowdy boys, I noticed a buck I had never seen running in the same direction that s8 came from ,but in a hurry. I got glass on him and could tell he was not legal. His horns were tall and narrow. I had a pic of an old deer early this fall, but could not be sure if this was him. This deer was really spooked by something and after thinking about it, I realized he might have been spooked my my truck. He finally made his way to the south tree line and disappeared just as s8 did.
Another 15 minutes passed and we giggled and i explained as much about hunting as possible to the two boys. I explained that when a deer is nervous or scared they sometime blow through the nose. I was trying to get them to realize that all their back and forth SHHHH!! might alert any deer that something is scary around here. I really try to teach them as mush as I can with my limited knowledge. I want them to love the outdoors as much as I do.
Brock and Bryson in the blind. Brock acting goofy! |
While my lesson was falling on deaf ears, I see another BIG bodied deer crossing the meadow N-S(again). Put glass to it and my heart skips. I tell Bryson to get ready. He is ahead of me and has his .223 up and aimed at him. I let out a grunt and the buck stops, but is facing straight away and looking over his back. Bryson says" I'm gonna shoot him right in the butt hole!" I didn't let him, but it was tempting.
The rest of the sit was pretty uneventful, but we got some good hunting time in and got to see some good bucks.
Our blind...pretty good if I do say so myself. |
Hope we get a repeat visit on turkey day...We will be in the stand ready with Miss Doe posing in the meadow about 100 yards out.
Until Turkey day...
Jake Atchley Nov 11th 2012
Jake is a trooper and didnt let this bother him. He will be a great hunter under the careful instruction of his dad...whom I call Dead Eye in federence to a coyote double kill on the meadow one sunday night.
We spotted the pair stalking a group of deer. I told randy to get ready... Randy said "light em up!" no sooner than I hit the button and shed light on the dogs, Randy let his trusty .204 ring and smacked one dead in is tracks. The other hauled tail and at about 200 yards in full run, Dead Eye blasted the other dog as it ran full speed. I was very impressed with his shooting ability.
Until next go round...
First Hunt-November 10th 2012
MORNING-Randy was at the house when we were leaving...he kinda scared the crap out of me. It was like a horror movie. I was walkin got my truck when out of nowhere a truck fired up and i was in the headlights.
Randy' kids didnt want to get up so he invited Bryson to sit with him. Bryson jumped on the offer and Brock tried to as well. I think they would have both went if I had not made Brock come with me.
We arrived a tad late, but the wind was not in our favor. We sat until about 7:45 and them I had to go get Brylee cause Jess had somewhere to go. We saw 2 doe crossing the meadow from N-S but that was all.
Bryson and Randy had a button buck at this feeder for about an hour. Randy said Bryson wanted to shoot him and that don't suprise me a bit. They did see shooter8 on the drive in, but Randy is a very ethical man and passed on the gray area kill. He said it would have ben easy to take him, but that takes the sport out of it.
EVENING-We arrive dto our set about 3:45pm. The wind was howling out of the south. I get a text from Randy saing he saw some "NO TRESSPASSING" sign and purple paint on trees on the meadow. I text backl to him for a bit and finally decided to go investigate. After walking the woods...verry carefully...we decided it was the man who lives to the east of the meadow. I have made a call to him and he said he had his place surveyed last year and has definite boundaries marked. I plan on meeting with him soon to get more info. It really isnt a big deal now because he has some of thw woods claimed, but I will need to clairfy for George and Helen Sue's sake.
Until we hit the woods again...
Hay Meadow Deer Hunting 2012
We finally got together a few weeks later and began preparation for the 2012 deer season.
The Baley Set is on the north side of the big cut and has a feeder, my rack, small food plot and a double set of ladder stands.
The Atchley Set is by the old lilly pad pool and has a popup, feered and small foot plot.
Randy and his FIL were kind enough to put in the food plots. Thanks Buddy!!!
I will include blog posts for each hunt....or I hope to.
Until next hunt......
2012 Football
Bryson enjoyed his first season playng football...I think. He was a tad hard to get to practice in the last few weeks, but all in all I think he enjoyed the games. He played center and linebacker. He did a great job in both positions. He really learned a lot and I think if he continues to play football, he will be a very good player.
Brock loves sports and there is no doubt in my mind he enjoyed this season. He played QB and WR on offense and being a 5th grader, got more playing time than some 6th graders. It was a bit scary seeing him out there with the much bigger boys...there is a huge difference between 5th grade boys and 6th grade boys.
Brylee was a good little trooper this season and loved it.
Loss of Great Friends!!!!
MY Thoughts: I'm in shock! I haven't had this empty feeling in my heart since Daddy died! I'm numb to the fact they are gone! I can watch TV and feel like nothing has changed, but something will come on, or one of my kids will walk by, or I will just look outside and realize Kenny and Micah will never be back. I get a huge lump in my throat and have to let out a big sign to compose myself. Lots of comments on Facebook show how much this family is loved! I also think about Jeremy...Kenny was his best friend, I bet they talked at least every other day. I was with Jeremy when we learned about Kenny's death. Jeremy didn't show any emotion, but I did notice his hands were shaking like. A leaf....I'm certain he was terrified...we had only "heard" Kenny was killed and we were both in shock. I'm sure the shock will not go away until the funeral. I have only wept at 2 funerals in my life...Blake's and Daddy's....I'm sure this one will bring me to my knees because anytime I hear of someone dying, I think of how much I miss my daddy! I'm going to make a point to try to help Adam and Karon get through this hard time.
I usually blog about hunting, but sometimes others thing are worth putting to paper!
